Hillside developed from parcels of land from its neighboring cities, Newark, Elizabeth and Union. The name " Hillside" derived from the Halley's Comet in 1910 which ironically remains the high school's team name the " Comets".This small town contains a lot of history and for that the Hillside historical Society was established  in the early 1980s. Some of the locations that are preserved by this historical society are the Woodruff House and the Eaton Store Museum. This small town also has an all sports museum which praises all the legends that came from this town. Hillside officially became a town on April 3rd of 1913.
